Menopause Mission

An odd thing for a man to be involved in? Or something we all should be involved in?

In the UK, access to treatment for perimenopause, menopause, and post-menopause is patchy at best.

The UK NHS is stretched, as we know. NHS GPs are under incredible pressure and despite their best intentions cannot deliver the consistent standards of care that are needed for something half of us will go through at some point in our lives.

My wife & I have personal experience of attempting to access NHS treatment for her early peri-menopause symptoms. This is what we found:

  • Ten-minute appointments with a GP
  • Dismissal of symptoms
  • Not being listened to
  • Unsympathetic and unempathetic attitudes
  • Can't speak to the same GP you spoke to last time
  • We even had a remark "…well I'm not putting you on HRT…" We hadn't even mentioned HRT. This was from the 'menopause specialist' at our GP surgery.
  • You're probably just depressed / stressed / overworked / it's your normal periods
  • You're too young
  • Citing of discredited studies
  • Overworked and stressed receptionists
  • Ridiculous wait times on phone lines

I could go on, but I think you get the point.

We didn't know where to turn to. Do we see a gynaecologist? Or a private menopause doctor or specialist? We didn't have private health insurance and decided to prioritise paying for a consultation with a private menopause specialist. It changed our lives for the better and we are incredibly grateful for her help.

The short story is that you may be able to get the care you need through NHS services in your area but it's far from guaranteed.

What we need is education, support and access to comprehensive medical care, therapies, and health advice.

We're not going to get this from the NHS in its current state, but we can choose to educate ourselves and put ourselves in the best position to get ahead, prepare, and access effective solutions.

Menopause Mission is about connecting those who need expert care with those who can provide it.

A resource hub that is constantly being updated. We're learning as we go and I'm not here to give anyone medical advice. I just want you to know that it is out there and show you how you can access it. There are free resources and resources and services that you pay for.

I have experience in online marketing and it's natural fit for me to combine this with something I care about. I run paid adverts on social media platforms to get people to visit the Menopause Mission website. In some cases, I will receive a small commission if you buy something from the resources I link to on the Menopause Mission website (in development). These are marked with an asterisk. In other cases, it's a link to a free resource. Feel free to just read the site and not click on anything, but I would encourage you to at least have a look at the free resources I link to.

If you are a charity or a for-profit organisation, please contact me using the form on either this site or the Menopause Mission site. I'd love to hear from you and see if you can offer professional help to anyone who visits the Menopause Mission site.
